Background

A new build project consisting of 5 purpose built flats comprising of four two bedroom apartments and a two bedroom penthouse apartment to the second floor located within close proximity to Elm Park London Underground Station on the District Line.

The Problem

Locating a contractor that is accredited and one who could undertake all of the works required with their own in-house labour force.

The Solution

Sandtofts Wienerberger 20/20 clay tiles, Sika Sarnafil’s single ply pvc membrane and lead sheet for the dormers and flashings.

The Benefits
The 20/20 is a new generation clay tile that makes a clay plain tile roof more affordable through an innovative design that will reduce labour and material costs, and cut completion times.

These benefits also translate into a significant reduction of CO2 emitted per roof because CO2 emissions are proportional to the tonnage of clay extracted, processed, dried and red. The design of the 20/20 means less material is used compared to traditional plain tiles and therefore a corresponding saving in the CO2 emitted per roof is achieved. In addition choosing 20/20 cuts the number of battens required per m2 of roof area by 60% further reducing the use of materials and lorry movements.

When this reduction is combined with Sandtoft’s use of 100% green electricity, 20/20 has the capacity to reduce the carbon footprint of a roof by a massive 50%.

Sika Sarnafil membranes come with a guarantee of up to 20 years, it is lightweight, clean and favoured by many architects the world over. Materials can only be bought and installed by Sarnafil trained and registered contractors, to maintain quality control. Whatever your at roof requirement you can be confident that a Sarnafil installation will provide you with a at roof solution that not only looks good, but can provide a lasting performance that is independently certified by the British Board of Agrément to have a life expectancy in excess of 40 years.

Lead is one of the oldest and most durable building materials.

Lead has been known to last for more than 500 years and is the most recycled and recovered building material in use today. It will last longer and age more beautifully than any of its syntheti- cally produced substitutes. Lead is more environmentally friendly than alternatives made by the petrochemical industry - even its reclamation is energy efficient. So while Lead may at first appear marginally more expensive, in terms of longevity and ecology, (a significant factor in the light of possible future eco-taxes on building materials) it still o ers best value, and of course, also has a far greater aesthetic value.
